Captain of the White Tower by aautio Captain of the White Tower by aautio
This is actually one of my first attempts at colouring these illustrations digitally in Photoshop since I got my tablet. This one was mostly done before Christmas but I can't remember why I never posted these then.. Here it is now, anyway.
This is the coloured version of this deviation. See the description there for details. Colouring this took quite a bit of time and I still think I prefer the sepia version over this one..

Proportions not very well :( You could do it better!

Yeah, I know his head is a bit too large and the perspective with the hand isn't working too well, especially with the puffy sleeve that makes the shape of the arm hard to read.. Other than that, I didn't think there was too much off with general proportions.. Thanks for the critique. :)

You're wellcome :) Of course I wouldn't draw it in at least half well as you draw, but I had to say it ;) I don't like proportions of his left arm (too short) and I think the eyes are too close to each other, but of course it's your vision. He has right to have some disproportions of his face, he's not a Dunadan of course ;) I love your works, you have a very good style.

Is there any possibility to do something with his arm?

I think both versions are good! I do like your colouring style here -- very subtle, as if you're looking at a picture in an old book. Very nice! :)

Thank you! :) Something like "a picture in an old faded book" was indeed the impression I was going for.

You're welcome! It really is fantastic colouring -- I thought at first it was watercolour. :D

P.S.
Try to colour with brown and ocra tones, like the ones of the paper, then add colour just in the light parts, where you can play also with the white.
Something, like I did here [link]

It can be a non violent approach :D

I think the result is great, but it's up to you to feel it right ;)

Yes, that looks fantastic! I should try to take some drawings more to this direction and see how they turn out! Thanks!

I really don't dislike the coloured one. I think it's just you must get used to the colour. When you make a pencilwork as a finished piece, in a way colour annoys you. YOu colour already with your pencilshading, and the awesome result of your pieces show that.

I think you have to find the right digital technique, that fits your style, your favourite colour scheme and leave behind the fear of ruining the pencilwork, thing that i needed years to overcome ;)

So, please, go on in colouring, I see fantastic colours used here, just a bit of fear, nothing more! :XD:

Thanks, Ana! :) I know.. that's probably the problem here: I make a finished drawing and the colour is another element that doesn't work so well with finished lines. The drawing doesn't really need colour, and the colour is limited by the defining drawing.. I should learn to draw in a way that's actually meant to be coloured later. And like you said, I probably takes time.. I'll just keep on trying to work a bit diffrently and maybe I'll learn to work with colour too. Thanks for encouragement! :)
