Fingon Prepares for His Quest to Save Maedhros

“Then Fingon the valiant, son of Fingolfin, resolved to heal the feud that divided the Noldor, before their Enemy should be ready for war; fot the earth trembled in the Northlands with the thunder of the forges of Morgoth underground. Long before, in the bliss of Valinor, before Melkor was unchained, or lies came between them, Fingon had been close in friendship with Maedhros; and though he knew not yet that Maedhros had not forgotten him at the burning of the ships, the thought of their ancient friendship stung his heart. Therefore he dared a deed which is justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor: alone, and without the counsel of any, he set forth in search of Maedhros.”

-- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, chapter 13: Of the Return of the Noldor

Another older piece, drawn back in February 2006, I think, as a concept sketch for a Tolkien project. I was mainly interested in Fingon's equipment in this one.. and so, as usual, I didn't pay enough attention to his anatomy - it's a bit off even after I did some corrections to it in Photoshop. But the stuff he's carrying was the main focus anyway.. I felt he needed to have adequate travel gear, but light enough to be able to go by foot. He definitely took a lot of stuff with him, though.. I mean who would ever set out to the wilderness alone without a harp, right? ;)

Pencil drawing + Photoshop, as usual. I went for a bit more finished look and did more shading than I usually do.. But looking at it now, I'm not too thrilled about the funky anatomy and over-the-top gear. I should probably give the subject another try.. sometime.

(Ughh.. it seems they've messed up deviation categories big time...)

Love your version of him (he's my favorite Tolkien character :D), and the detail in the armor/clothing and weapons is impressive.

This is absolutely wonderful! I love it!

The idea of him using a two-handed sword makes me grin (is it a claymore? Or are the swords you draw not meant to be quite equivalent to the sorts in our world?), and the inclusion of the harp is equally delightful.

I mean... they're elves. They seem to live on poetry as much as they do on actual food and drink.

I've never thought about Elves wielding two-handed swords, but it would make sense. I love the overall design, especially the boots and the helm. The plume is so beautifully extravagant...

Hahaha. . . the part about him finding Maedhros by playing his harp always made me go "wtf was he doing with a harp!?"

Fingon: What are the basic essentials for a long, dangerous trek? Food, sword, harp. . .

Gotta love those elves.

The detail in this is crazy amazing! The scale maile, the helm, the sword. . . in other words everything!

Yeah.. he had his priorities in order! :D The harp always amused me as well, although it also reminded me of Kalevala.

Thanks a lot! :)

First thought: that is one heckuva great sword! So my train of thoughts immediately was like: he's a two handed fighter, will he strap the sword on his back and before I knew it it felt as I slipped in Fingon's head. This is a great accomplishment to engage your viewer in your artwork. Excellent work with a lot of intriguing details.
