Lúthien Tinúviel

Of Lúthien the Beloved

Such lissom limbs no more shall run
on the green earth beneath the sun;
so fair a maid no more shall be
from dawn to dusk, from sun to sea.
Her robe was blue as summer skies,
but grey as evening were her eyes;
her mantle sewn with lilies fair,
but dark as shadow was her hair.
Her feet were swift as bird on wing,
her laughter merry as the spring;
the slender willow, the bowing reed,
the fragrance of a flowering mead,
the light upon the leaves of trees,
the voice of water, more than these
her beauty was and blissfulness,
her glory and her loveliness.

-- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Lay of Leithian

This is an attempt to depict Lúthien as Beren saw her dancing in the forest of Neldoreth: singing together with the nightingales with flowers springing at her feet as her song swept away the winter and awakened the spring. Obviously it's a poor attempt.. I like this drawing, but it really doesn't do Lúthien justice. She's supposed to be the most beautiful being that ever lived, but I just managed to draw a relatively pretty girl with a big head who looks like she's wearing too much make-up.. :roll: ..Wait, perhaps the secret of Lúthien's unmatched beauty was that she was the only girl in Middle-earth who knew a cosmetologist.. :D

*cough* uhmm.. aaanyway, nothing special about this; HB pencil + HB mech. pencil on regular printer paper + the usual Photoshop treatment. No idea how long this took me in total, but probably an hour to draw the whole thing and five more to shade the evil dress! :shakefist:

Despite the errors in this one I still like it.

oh man! you draw incredibly! but.. remember Lűthien Tinűviel was described as the most beatiful elf ever!!! and the elves are more beatiful than any other specie, so, where's the beauty? i didn't like her in your drawing, but the drawing it's pretty coo!

Thank you! :)

Well.. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. I know I could've done a better job depicting Lúthien and I'll probably give it another go sometime, but in my opinion she turned out quite pretty in this one, even if I'm not completely satisfied with her face.. Anyway, probably our taste in women is just different. ;)

i wasn't talking about her body and sorry if you though that, i respect your works, yo an awesome drawer. for me the beauty isn't in the body, is in the face, the face needs more work, but the rest of the drawing is just awesome. Oh by the way, what is the english translation for Dűnedain? my main language is spanish so i know it as "montaraz", how you say it in english?

Thanks. :)

Hhmm, "dúnedain" just traslates to "men of the west" as you probably know, but I believe the English word you're looking for is "ranger(s)", since that would be the closest appropriate equivalent of "montaraz".. (not that I'd know much Spanish, but anyway..) :)

I reallyn really like this one. I think you are being a little self-critical. =D

...if you do this again, I would love to see her long beautiful dark hair dancing on the wind...

The flowering grass is so lovely and such a nice touch in this drawing. It works to echo the same melodic movement in Luthien.

Beautiful as always!
Especially her dress... And her face, even if you say she has used too much make-up *laughs*.

Don't worry so much about mistakes, it's a great drawing.

Thank you for your comments. She's supposed to be running and twirling around, but I agree that she doesn't really look quite as graceful as i would have wanted.. perhaps the feet should've been longer, i don't know :shrug:

Very nice! I am wondering, however, how do you add the sort of parchment effect to the paper? In Adobe, I assume, but I'm sure there's a little more to that. XD

It's quite simple, :mindofka: gave me the tip and i've worked it into a method i use for all these illustrations. It's basically:
1) Scan a regular paper (with a good scanner and high resolution, ~600dpi)
2) Tweak the scan is PS (contrast, hue/saturation) to bring out the texture and make it brownish
3) Clean the scan (remove visible dust and strong dark points with clone stamp tool)
4) Select/copy-paste areas (with lasso tool, max. feather) of the paper into new layers and set their opacity/blending mode to make the centre part lighter (colour dodge/linear dodge/screen, very low opacity) and the edges darker (multiply + colour burn, both with relatively low opacity)
5) Flatten and save. This is your basic paper. You can obviously experiment and scan different kinds of papers and parchment effects.. I've done that too, but i feel a very neutral paper with a subtle texture that doesn't interfere with my lineart works the best for me. I have several basic papers for different working resolutions to keep the texture size similar in my illustrations.

Then when you've 1) scanned your drawing, you just 2) paste the paper layer in. You can either set i on multiply and put a sepia coloured layer underneath it in colour mode to set the lineart colour or you can make a copy of your lineart layer, colorize that with hue/saturation and set it on top in multiply mode. (In this particular piece I actually did both, to control the relationship between the lineart and the highlights below it, but i usually employ the simple "colorized lineart on multiply" strategy). 3) Then the edges. Do exactly as you did when you first made the paper: select a suitable area of the paper with lasso tool, feather, copy-paste and set to multiply. Repeat with same selection and Color burn. Tweak the opacity to get the effect you want. The whole process takes 5 minutes. 4) The highlights might take a bit longer, though, but it's fast stuff anyway. I usually paint them on as a selection with brush tool in quick mask, then I copy-paste it from the paper layer to a new one and set it on screen mode and suitable opacity below the topmost lineart layer. Repeat as needed. There you go: parchment effect in 15 minutes! :D I categorize these as traditional art, since the digital part is really very small in them, they're still essentially pencil drawings.

Hope this helps you some.

Fantastic dress. Once more a male artists puts her into semi transparent dress or I am just weird to see it this way. I love this idea even if it was not intentional :thumbsup:

The dress is indeed meant to be of translucent silk.. it was an exercise in drawing that kind of fabric. It doesn't really show anything, just hints at the form. I think it fits her well, since i wanted to reflect the controversial aspects of her character: The childlike wonder, joy and playful innocence of her pose and expression as well as the barely veiled sexuality that she personifies, more than any other character in Tolkien's writings. I'm glad you like it. :)

Yup I like it and you captured it well :thumbsup:

I also love the flowers in her hair, the bird and her face :) But I agree with Nifrodel about legs, though the position is not impossible. You would probably caught her in better one if she wasn't moving so fast :D

BTW, you are the armor specialist, would you advice me here [link] ? Nothing hurry, I'm not touching this image now, I feel I need to learn much more to finish it, the work will take some time. But since this is just a concept this is the best moment to fix things.
