Nirnaeth: Fingon the Valiant by aautio Nirnaeth: Fingon the Valiant by aautio
Nirnaeth Arnoediad: ‘Utúlie’n aurë!’

“Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: ‘Utúlie’n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatari, utúlie’n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!’ And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: ‘Auta i lómë! The night is passing!’ ”

- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, Chapter 20, Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad

Fingon the Valiant, son of Fingolfin; High King of the Ñoldor in Exile, ready to ride into the battle of Unnumbered Tears.. and to his death.

This drawing had several starting points: 1) I wanted to have another go at drawing a horse.. this time I did my homework and looked at many horse pictures for reference; 2) I wanted to further develop my design for elven armour.. now I can scrap that helmet study; 3) This scene was on my to-do list.. I'm planning several Nirnaeth illustrations; 4) After those more sketchy pencil-style illustrations I wanted to try a more clean inked lineart style; 5) I wanted to draw Fingon; :) 6) I did not want to write like I was supposed to.. :paranoid:

Throw all those together and this came out.. I quite like it myself. :) Drawn in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet, about 5 hours total. I started this yesterday and was going to leave it as WIP to wait for a later time.. but I just couldn't resist finishing it up this morning.. :ohmygod: I'll have to do something to keep myself concentrated with actual work! I think I'll need to lock up my tablet (I knew I should've waited until I'm all done with work before buying one! :shakefist:), so this will definitely be my last submission for some time.. Enjoy. :)

EDIT: I edited the horse's hooves, they're bigger now. Some minor tweaks and slight changes to the size to make it work as a print

I love your pencil Silmarillion pieces! You should do more Sil drawings...*greedy*

I'm working on one of Fingolfin standing before a host of Noldor, holding his sword and helm and...yeah, well...it'll be a while before it's finished!

Thank you! :D Heh, fooled you.. :giggle: this is drawn with my new tablet, not pencil. It's still just the same style as my pencil pieces, though.. :XD: I will definitely draw more Sil stuff.. when i'll have time.

Thanks, Ana! :) I'm happy with this.. i managed to complete the armour design, Fingon turned out well, and i'm particularily happy about the horse, since i'm just learning to draw those.. I'm still going to edit his hooves, though, since i got some feedback about those.

Thank you! I'm very happy with the horse, it's much better than the first attempt.. but this time i searched with google for lots of horse pictures and studied them as reference, so it should be too! :)

I like this digital medium.. now that the lineart is on different layer from the shading, i can try all kinds of things with colour later with a clean lineart! :D

:giggle: hehehe, yeah, it's completely digital! (Except the paper texture is originally scanned.. but anyway). I still think pencil is my favourite medium, but i'm learning to use the tablet as well and i quite like all the possibilities it offers!

Duuuude.....O.o Awesome job on the horse!! I do agree that the hooves look funny. They're too small... Well, the right front (from the horse's perspective) looks just right. And the armor is awesome (horse AND human...er...elf)!! I wish I had some armor like that for MY horse...

This horse looks fantastic, his head is well done and body looks fine... such a difference from the last one! O_o What happened? The hooves seem a little bit small, but not enough to distract me from the rest of the picture. I only noticed after staring at it for a few minutes. :) The right front hoof looks good. The rest, meh. Moving up the picture....
O_O
That guy is freaking awesome! Armour is epic enough to satisfy even my deepest cravings for krig.. slaget och blod.. *cough* I was... just... daydreaming a minute ago. Whoops... aaaanyway, his sword is lovely, and the details in this are very nicely done indeed. Overall it's a well balanced picture, me thinks.

Thanks, Lissu! What happened? Well, references happened! I googled for horse pics and studied them.. also there's some pretty extensive sketching on invisible layers there! :D Hmm, i guess i could still touch up the hooves, then.. later. One can edit digital images endlessly, that's the beauty of it. :D

So.. you speak Swedish too, now? :XD: You're just amazing, but you do know that, of course!

Awesomeness!!! The sword is so shiny!!! And and everything just looks awesome! The horse's hooves look a little weird to me, but they ~always~ look weird to me, so it's probably just me. I love the armour, both on the horse and on the guy... Wonderful work!

Thank you, my friend! :D I had a separate sketching layer for each part (and about 7 for the lineart, 2 for shading, 1 for details..) and i worked hard on the pose before doing any detailwork. This is where the digital medium is really wonderful.. you can rescale, rotate and move parts of the posing sketch until it looks right and only then start drawing! I must say i'm really happy and proud of how this turned out!

 What a faaaaantastic armor! How do you make it? It must be kind of magic :paranoid:
Hoprse is adorable , too. The only thing looking a bit off to me is the sword's direction - maybe it's just my tired eyes (I painted the whole night again, those wacom tablets are indeed evil thigs!) but for me his hand is in another angle than the sword. Like the sword should be turned 3-5 degrees higer.
I want to use your armor concepts as reference, may I? And clothes, your designs are fantastic  Can't wait for more Nirnaeth images, wish to make some myself one day.
